Buzzwords du Jour: Adlets, Blinks and Flogs---Oh My!
Amaze and impress your family and friends with these need-to-know buzzwords:
Adlet: This cute little name is for those ever so tiny ads---just 5 seconds in length, that marketers can buy from Clear Channel Communications.Via Knowledge at Wharton
Blink: As in, if you blink, you'll miss these 1 and 2 second ads, also courtesy of Clear Channel Communications. Just goes to show nothing is too insignifcant to have its own name. Via Knowledge at Wharton
Astroturf: To create a false impression of a spontaneous, grassroots response to an issue or event---as in fake grassroots, get it? While an individual can astroturf, the term typically refers to political organizations, public relations agencies, lobbyists, etc., who are attempting to sway public opinion through deception.
CPA: All the big kids are talking about "cost per aquisition" (CPA) as the metric to focus on instead of cost per click. But direct response markters have known for years that response, or it's online equivalent, clicks, mean nothing. I'ts the conversions, or in online parlance, the aquisitions, that matter.
Flash-packers, Jetrosexuals: Fueled by cheap fares and the rise of the Asian textile industry, these are people who travel the world, usually Asia, "carrying an iPod and the latest issue of Vogue," searching out cheap faux couture clothing. Via Fast Company Blog
Flog: a fake blog created to appear to have been written by consumers. Sony, Wal-Mart/Edelman have all been linked to creating fake blogs for marketing or political communications. Not a good idea, as they found out.
